Isle of Anglesey County Council

G. Purchase Construction has been appointed by Isle of Anglesey County Council to facilitate the achievement of the Welsh Housing Quality Standards for its housing stock. The WHQS requires all local authorities, as landlords, to improve their housing stock to an acceptable level by 2012, and our Agreement involves kitchen and bathroom refurbishments and the rewiring of nearly 4000 Council owned properties on the Island.

The programme is valued at approximately £19 million over the duration of the framework.

Following a highly successful and very well-attended Employment Fair we are now using almost 100% local labour to deliver the works, as well as 85% local project management staff. We utilize a local supply chain and have taken on apprentice joiners, plasterers, plumbers and electricians as well as train local people. These actions comply with the requirements of the tender which included all of the Targeted Recruitment and Training clauses from the WHQS CAN DO Toolkit. Other than RCT Homes in 2007/08, Anglesey was the first in Wales to do this.

Our partnership successes have already received recognition of the highest order. In November 2009, at the Welsh Housing Awards the partnership received the Chartered Institute of Housing’s Award for ‘Delivering Customer Driven Services’, and G. Purchase Construction Ltd received the individual Award for ‘Most Community Focussed Contractor’
